Religion
Jamie was Jewish
Mark Catholic
Farah a Muslim
Chris believed in Jesus.
Born into it raised that way
Indoctrinated from birth,
Taught to accept only theirs
Everyone else a non-believer or an atheist.
Millions killed over it throughout history
Wars and fatwas and prosecutions,
Large degrees of judgment
Controlled by fear and guilt.
But shouldn’t the principle of religion be
Although we’re all different,
There’s only one God?
I don’t care what your book says
If you’re truly a person of God
You would know,
That we’re all equal
In his or her eyes.
Your commitment to your religion
Does not impress me,
Your adherence to basic decency
Humanity and
Kindness does.
So if you ask me,
And it’s ok if you don’t,
These are what the principles of Religion
No, humanity
Should be,
Good thoughts
Good words
Good deeds.
We don’t need a label,
Just be a good soul.
