I Used To Be

Our life experiences change us, they make us who we are today. Not too long ago, I too was a Fox News/Conservative Daily/Shawn Hannity/Bill O’Reilly loving; Clinton/Democrat/CNN hating, anything Liberal equals a 4-letter word, hardcore Conservative Republican. Not so much anymore and I’ve been asked why? The best way I can answer that is in the form of a poem. A very personal poem I’ve written called “I used to be.” Here goes nothing:
“I Used to Be”
I used to be a homophobe
Then my Kasra came out at home
I used to be “man-of-the-house” matters
Until I had my two daughters
I used to be so damn vain
Vitiligo, face full of spots jump-started my brain
I used to be oh so sensitive
Scleroderma got my priorities straight
Kathy? It’s her job…took her for granted
Bedside, many nights at hospital happened
I used to be all Brand Name
2008 recession with a bang came
I used to be food whatever
PediaSure with a feeding tube, every hour
I used to be pro-gun
Till my uncle was killed with one
Had full lips and could whistle
Skin tightened, lips fizzled
I used to be a Fox News Conservative
Stem Cell & gay marriage changed the narrative
I used to be angry, finger pointed at Dems
A new perspective, learned no one has all the answers
So my friend when you ask why I’ve changed?
Truth is, life is too short and love’s stronger than hate
