Farewell Old Friend
by S. J. Tavakoli · February 18, 2016
Today we lost our beloved friend Afsaneh. I wrote this poem as it’s therapeutic and it helps me cope better. I hope it is therapeutic to read it as well. BTW, her name meant fairy tale.
FAREWELL OLD FRIEND
A broken heart
A river of tears
An empty space
This can’t be real
Our angel has gone
To spread her wings
Gone to heaven
To join her peers
Grief-stricken
From head to toe
Why is she gone
Yet we’re still here
We’re going to miss
Her beautiful soul
Her contagious smile
Her humble ways
Her warm embrace
Her intelligence
Her generosity
Her authentic spirituality
Her steadfast loyalty
Her undeniable purity
Her engaging personality
Gentle and kind
To friend or foe
Only had one face
Never hurt a soul
Ever since we knew her
As little kids in school
A circle of light
Shined above her head
Everyone
Always equal in her eyes
Rich poor short or tall
She wore that halo
For all of us
So don’t fret don’t despair
Our beautiful angel
Just got her wings
But she’s not going far
Somewhere up in the sky
Our guardian angel
Is watching over all of us
So our beloved friend
Our fairy tale
Save a spot in heaven
And for now farewell
…until we meet again
